Dear Friends
Welcome to the Autumn newsletter for Voice Events with Ravi Freeman plus latest news
I am writing this on the last night of the most memorable of many visits to Essauoira, Morocco. I have had the opportunity to deepen two friendships with local musicians that have been slowly developing, particularly over the last year. Abdul is a 5th generation Sufi singer that started studying with a Maalaam (teacher) when he was 5 years old. I was honoured to lead with Abdul, an evening of Voice Activation at Moga Yoga in the Medina (old walled city). This is a short segment from the Sound Journey (hence the darkness).
Youness Paco, is a well known Gnawa musician and singer, whose father was one of the most well known Masters of Gnawa and the Gimbri, bass instrument. This is a clip from the recent visit, in which I am playing Ngombi (Pygmy Harp).
After 7 years of developing the formats of Kirtan & Cacao, Overtone Singing & Voice Workshops and Voice retreats, there have been, in recent times, some wonderful opportunities to dive deeper into our voices and develop the formats further, the peak of which was “Find Your Voice, Find Your Resonance” , the all day event at Castle Ashby
Other highlights from summer 2026 were, realising the first song album in ten years, “Teacher in the Forest”, continuing to offer Community Voice Events at various venues and centres around UK, and performances at Sundara Yoga Camp, Connect Festival and Medicine Festival
“Community, to me, means a magical togetherness. There’s no need to know each other. We all come from different walks of life, which is such a beautiful thing. And then to sit in one room and to seek a unity. You leave knowing that you have a sense of belonging in the world, even though you may not know each other by name”
– Abel Selaocoe
I look forward to singing with you at some point, meanwhile, we continue to find our voice and our resonance

News
Castle Ashby, Northampton
On Saturday 3rd October, after four Kirtan & Cacao evening sessions, I led a one–day voice event at Castle Ashby, the stately home of Lord and Lady Northampton. Spenny and Tracey, as they are also known, were part of the event and led the forest bathing and the labyrinth walk. We explored overtone singing, chanting, chakra toning and much more. It was such a success that I’ve been asked to lead another on Saturday 10th April 2027, with a Kirtan & Cacao evening the night before on Friday 9th April. Accommodation is available for anyone who would like to stay.
Malvern
On Saturday 14th November I will be performing again at the Annual College of Sound Healing Conference, held at the lovely old Abbey Hotel in the beautiful spa town of Malvern, near Worcester. It was at this event, eight years ago, that I met a living relative of John Newton, who wrote the words to Amazing Grace about 250 years ago. That meeting led to some deep research into the song and its writer. Watch this space for more.
NEW ALBUM: Teacher In The Forest
My first song album in ten years is out now. It reimagines six iconic, classic medicine songs written by Nick Barber, and features Adrian Freedman (shakuhachi), Bahram Ji (voice and santoor) and the beautiful voice of Charlotte Mabon. It’s available on all platforms.
Re-release: In The Presence by Tsumi
An album of instrumental music from the late ’80s has been re–released. It features legendary musicians including Steve Jolliffe (Tangerine Dream), Jon Swain (Blowzabella) and Miten (before he met Deva Premal).
Morocco
I have always loved Moroccan music and culture. Over the last year I’ve been exploring them more deeply by getting to know the coastal city of Essaouira, an artistic and cultural hub and the home of Gnawa, Morocco’s trance music. This has led to projects with two renowned local musicians. One of them is Youness Paco, son of one of the most legendary Gnawa musicians, who played with Jimi Hendrix when Hendrix visited in 1969.
Twenty years ago I was part of a groundbreaking, Arts Council–funded tour with five members of the Mehinaku tribe of the Amazon and the Brazilian legend Marlui Miranda. I had already recorded two albums with Marlui, Neuneneu and The Afro Brazilian Project. At the start of this year, the son of one of the tribe members who toured with us contacted me to ask for financial help to buy medical supplies.
I turned to my friend and colleague Annette Olivieri of Native Spirit Threads CIC. Native Spirit Threads works with indigenous tribes, selling their artefacts to raise funds that go back to the tribes. We now have jewellery and other pieces made by the Mehinaku for sale. To find out more, please contact Native Spirit Threads at nativespiritthreads@gmail.com.
