Album Review from The Osho Times

Ravi has produced many devotional and world music albums often with a focus on his kora playing. Songs for the Golden Age, has many trademarks of his previous work, the beautiful arrangements, exceptional musicianship and exquisite production. In everything else this collection of songs represent a quantum shift, a maturity and a coming of age. The songs speak directly to the heart and soul, carried by a voice that has become even more beguiling, sensitive and refined.

The opening song, Waves of Love, transforms the well known chant (So Much Magnificence) into a powerful song with words that inspire and lift the soul. The title song, Golden Age, offers gentle reminders of who we truly are and reveals the fluidity and dynamics of Ravi’s unique opened tuned guitar style in a minimal arrangement accompanied by the sweet yet strong female voice of Jahnavi. Then in, Deep into the Night, Ravi combines the restrained use of woodwind, string arrangements and Spencer Cozens grand piano, to wreath a lullaby for the heart that takes one on a journey of surrender.

This is not just a collection of songs to listen to for enjoyment, it is a healing pilgrimage taking the listener on an inner journey with the invitation to surrender attachment to personality and rest in the peace and beauty of heart and soul. The themes are constant reminders of our connection to all things, our essential spiritual nature, the overwhelming presence of Love, the heart as sanctuary, surrender, blissfulness, gratitude and our need for community and family on the path. Shamanic, devotional and inspirational, the songs are woven with musical arrangements ranging from minimal to psychedelic, (as in the instrumental section of We Are). Choosing musicians of exceptional quality, and special guests such as Deva Premal & Miten, Manose and Sudha, Ravi has given us a crafted collection of songs that are irresistible.

The message, the melodies, the instrumentation work together seamlessly and effortlessly in such a way that the virtuoso performances of Ravi’s many collaborators on this album blend rather than stick out. This is his most important and inspired work so far. Lock the doors, turn the phone off and listen to this album all the way through in the dark on a great sound system, like we used to do before time sped up.

ABOUT
“SONGS FOR THE GOLDEN AGE”
Songs For the Golden Age took five years to complete, features top musicians and original songs of a subtle spiritual flavour, plus a cover of the classic song We Are  (originally by Sweet Honey in The Rock)

As well as some excellent singing from Ravi, Sudha and Jahnavi , many of the tracks feature the unique sound of guitar, mini guitar, Steinway grand piano and string quartet. The album was mixed by Phll Nicholas, who has worked on many top selling albums

The lead track for the album is a new version of the chant “So much Magnificence” which Ravi has turned into a song and also features special guests Deva Premal & Miten and Manose on bansuri . The album ends with a very “filmic” sounding instrumental version of the track

About RAVI:

Ravi’s music is the result of a lifetime exploring the edges of music through songwriting, world music, throat singing and a journey that has taken him from India to The Amazon. Described by Songlines Magazine as “a walking testament to the success of multi-cuturalism”. Singer/songwriter & multi-instrumentalist Ravi plays open tuned guitar, and is also one of the longest established European players of the kora (West African harp). As well as international performances and workshops there has been work with luminaries such as Nigel Kennedy, Jon Lord and Baaba Maal and pioneering projects such as “Neuneneu” with Brazilian legend Marlui Miranda, that brought Amazon indians on a tour of Europe.

We Are (writtenby Sweet Honey in the Rock)

For each child that’s borna morning star rises

and sings to the universe who we are

We are our grandmothers prayerswe are our grandfathers dreamings

We are Mothers of courage

fathers of time

Daughters of dust andsons of great visions

we are sisters of mercy andbrothers of love

lovers of life and the builders of nations

We’re seekers of truthand keepers of faith

makers of peace, wisdom of ages

We are our grandmothers prayers

and we are our grandfathers dreamings

we are the breath of the ancesters

we are the spirit of God

For each child that’s born

a morning star rises and sings

to the universe who we are

“WAVES OF LOVE”

by Ravi (and Peter Makena)

THERE IS SO MUCH MAGNIFICENCE, NEAR THE OCEAN, WAVES ARE COMING IN

THERE’S A LIGHT ON THE WATER, SONS AND DAUGHTERS, FROM THE PAST AND THE FUTURE

SONGS AND PRAYERS OF OUR ANCESTORS, GRANDMOTHERS AND FATHERSRETURN ON THE WAVE OF THIS SONG

COME TOGETHER IN THE POWER OF SOUND, BROTHERS AND SISTERS

AS THE WALLS OF ILLUSION TUMBLE DOWN

SINGING CIRCLES ON THE WATER, SONS AND DAUGHTERS

WE CREATE…… AS WE WILL IN THIS AGE

SONGS AND PRAYERS FOR THE FUTURE, SEE THE EYES

OF THE NEXT SEVEN GEN-ERATIONS

HOW MANY TIMES HAVE WE BEEN PROVED WRONG

LET THE WAVES OF VOICES WASH OVER YOU IN THIS SONG

A CHANCE TO TRUST IN THIS PRESENT TIME

LET THE WAVES OF LOVE WASH OVER YOU IN THIS LIFE

“DEEP INTO THE NIGHT”

words and music by RAVI (aka JP FREEMAN)

1) we’re walking though the door, this portal of love

I’ve never felt before, such a moment of trust

revealing secret realms and melodies, in your heart

this circle of sound,

when love is on your side, hearts they open wide

2) this room is like a boat, as we glide across waters wide

this love is like the wind in the billowing sails under starry skies

lets steer a course for home and all that we long for

with this circle of light,

when love is at the helm, hearts they start to melt,

CHORUS Letting go, we’re letting go, deep into the night

3) Illuminating flames, as they touch in the dark

reflecting back to you, is simply all that you are

were wrapped inside a blanket so divine

a circle of love

the call becomes so strong, this light will guide us on

4) we drink a cup of all the colours of life

embrace the dark and all the sweetness of the light

we find a door that wasn’t there before

a portal of trust

and lifetimes we have roamed, to find a way back home

BR) Letting go, letting go, deep into the night

and one by one the stars all start to fade

to reveal the light of a brand new day
